Local authorities and civil society organisations including charities, NGOs, community groups, social enterprises, mutuals and co‐operatives can apply to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Household Reward and Recognition Scheme for grants to trial or introduce schemes which reward or recognise people or communities for positive behaviours in dealing with household waste. £0.5 million is available in 2011-12; further funding may be available in future years.

The priorities for this round of funding are to support schemes which promote:

• Reuse or repair (including preparing for reuse)
• Recycling - for example, schemes could relate to kerbside, bring-based systems, or recycling on the go.

Defra is keen to support new projects, not to maintain established ones.

Grants can be for capital items such as vehicle modifications for the weighing of containers and container ID technology and/or for revenue costs associated with the scheme such as project management/staff time involved in establishing the scheme, communications to inform residents of the scheme or monitoring to demonstrate the uptake and impact of the scheme.

Deadline: 5:00 pm, 26 July 2011
