The website ThirdSector has reported that the new structure Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) will be available soon. It is thought the structure will be available later this year, in autumn, once parliament has passed the necessary regulations. The Charity Commission will then be able to start registering and regulating CIOs.

The CIO will be available to charitable organisations only and both new and existing charities/organisations will be able to consider becoming a CIO. CIOs will have to submit an annual return and accounts, keep registers of members and trustees, and have constitutions in place with certain provisions.

Organisations which become CIOs will only have to register with the Charity Commission and not Companies House to become incorporated. Other forms of incorporation will still remain available.
